No Updates Yet About Historic WPA Plaque
There are no updates about the historic bronze Works Progress Administration (WPA) marker that was stolen near the intersection of Alameda Ave. and Sheridan Blvd at Benton St. The federal plaque had remained near this corner for nearly a century. Any information should be reported to the Lakewood Police Det. Kaylee Forington kaylee.forington@lakewoodco.gov immediately.

The 90-year-old marker commemorated the 5,000 workers who extended Alameda Pkwy from Sheridan to Red Rocks Amphitheater during the Great Depression. It honors the collaboration between federal, state, and local governments to provide steady work during that time of high unemployment. We continue to benefit from those capital improvements today. In a poignant reversal of the New Deal’s legacy, plaques are now being targeted for their illegal scrap resale value by individuals facing their own modern economic instability.
